Description

The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences of sterile women, assess the significance of the experiences, and extract the beliefs of the women. Used in this study was an inductive and descriptive approach using a qualitative approach. Subjects were seven married women who had never given birth to a child before and had begun in-vitro fertilization. The authors had them narrated their experiences and made the word-for-word records of the experiences to analyze the experiences and extracted their beliefs. The sterile women experienced repetitive expectation of pregnancy and disappointment. They repeatedly believed in their possibility of pregnancy, strengthened their expectation every time they received treatment for sterility, and were desappointed as intensely as their expectation. Feelngs which were like waves and changed to the utmost limit were classified as the large-wave pattern. Feelings of sterile women who controlled themselves so that their disappointment could be minimized were classified as the small-wave pattern. They experienced repetitive waves of expectation and disappointmen. They were aware that sterility had helped them to (i) become aware of the tenderness of and support given by theirs husbands and (ii) ponder, together with their husbands, how to live their lives in future. They had the beliefs that the wife gave birth to children to make her husband a father and, thereby, find her own value. Thus, they suffered from sterility and, at the same time, sterility helped them to ponder on the marital relationship. That sterile women narrate their experiences would alleviate their sufferings, heal their mental wounds, and be useful for nursing.
