To observe the effects of new spring leaves (spring cycle leaves) and old leaves on the development of floral organs and the growth of young fruit, experiments were carried out with lateral branches of satsuma mandarin on trifoliate orange rootstock grown under field conditions. Treatments were as follows; (1) both old and developing spring leaves were kept (control plot); (2) old leaves were kept and spring leaves were removed (old-leaf plot); (3) old leaves were removed and spring leaves were kept (new-leaf plot); (4) both old and spring leaves were removed from the shoot (no-leaf plot). 1. Defoliation of old leaves had no effect on the number of flower buds on the branches. The flowering time in new-leaf plot was a few days later than that in control plot, and the physiological flower bud drops in new-leaf plot reached about 20%. 2. Comparing with leafy (3-5 leaves on the bearing shoot) and leafless fruit on the development of young fruit, the fruits in old-leaf plot were larger than ones in the other plots during two months after bloom. The leafy fruits in control plot were the largest among all plots after the end of July. The growth of young fruits in no-leaf plot came second in diameter, but most of the fruits fell until early July. The fruits in new-leaf plot were the smallest in diameter. At the end of July, the leafless fruits almost dropped, but the leafy ones grew in size. 3. At full bloom, the floral organs in old-leaf plot were the largest, and the old leaves showed strong effects in ovary weight. The ovary in new-leaf plot was small. The thickness of ovary wall at the equator was the largest in old-leaf plot, and was the smallest in new-leaf plot. The number of cell layers of the wall was about 57 in both old-leaf and control plot, but only 42 in new-leaf plot. The cells in the middle of ovary wall in old-leaf and control plot were larger, and in new-leaf plot were smaller, but there were no significant differences among the treatments.

温州ミカンの春季の旧葉及び新葉が開花・結実に及ぼす影響を摘葉処理で検討しようとして, 花器の発達と幼果の肥大を比較した. すなわち, 萌芽前2週間の3月下旬に, 25年生カラタチ台杉山系温州ミカン5樹の側枝(旧葉200枚前後着生)を選んで, 無処理区(旧葉, 新葉をともに着生), 旧葉区(旧葉のみ着生させ, 新葉は展葉前に摘除), 新葉区(旧葉は摘除し, 新葉のみ着生), 摘葉区(旧葉、新葉をすべて摘除)の4処理区を各樹にそれぞれ設けた. 萌芽期は4月8日で, 摘葉処理により変らなかった. 1. 旧葉の摘除は着蕾数に影響を与えなかったが, 新葉区の開花日は若干遅れ, 蕾の状態で落下するものが20%にも達した. 2. 各処理区の幼果の肥大を有葉果(3?5枚着葉)と直花果で比較したところ, 初期にはいずれも旧葉区で最も優れたが, 7月下旬以降は無処理区の有葉果が最大となった. 摘葉区の幼果は旧葉区に次ぐ大きさの果径を示して開花後肥大したが, 有葉果, 直花果ともに7月上旬にほとんどが落果した.新葉区の幼果の肥大は最も劣り, 直花果では7月下旬にすべて落下したが, 有葉果は次第に肥大良好となった. 3. 花器の発達度を満開期に比較すると, 旧葉区で最も優れ, 旧葉の着生はとくに子房の大きさに強い影響を示した. 新葉区の子房は処理区中最小であった. 子房壁の厚さを赤道部でみると, 旧葉区で最も厚く, 新葉区で最も薄かった. この部分の細胞層数は旧葉区と無処理区でほとんど変らず, 約57層であったのに対し, 新葉区は42層であった. また, 子房壁の中間の位置の細胞の大きさ(横断面積)には処理区間に有意差が認められなかったが, 旧葉区と無処理区で大きく, 新葉区で小さかった.
