Description

The influence of soil moisture on the diurnal fluctuation of fruit size was investigated with Satsuma mandarin trees grown in pot at the beginning of August, 1979. Under dry and high temperature condition, a considerable increase in fruit diameter occurred at night and contraction usually appeared in the daytime. When soil moisture was maintained to be suitable by the supply with proper amount of water every day, change of fruit diameter by enlargement in the night was greater than that by contraction in the daytime. This diurnal fluctuation of fruit diameter was closely related to the change of vapor pressure deficit but rather negatively related to that of solar radiation and air temperature. Especially, highly positive correlation was obtained between the contraction of fruit diameter and the decreasing rate of vapor pressure deficit. The enlargement of fruit diameter before mid-night was superior to that after mid-night. In the drought plot, the contraction of fruit diameter in the daytime was remarkable by the stop of watering on the daytime, as compared with that in non-drought plot, and the increment of fruit diameter at night in the former was considerably lower than that in the latter. Leaf water potential before sunrise (ψ max) was - 10 bars and below for the drought plot, while that was more than - 5 bars for non-drought plot. Rewatering in the daytime to the drought plot after severe water stress accelerated the fruit growth transitorily to high rate and the growth was continued until the mid-night ; after that, however, the growth decreased to the same rate as that in non-drought plot. In the drought plot, sprinkling for 30 minutes in the daytime hardly affected fruit growth, but suddenly lowered the temperature of leaf and fruit.

温州ミカンについて, 1979年の8月上旬に, 果径の日肥大周期におよほす土壌水分の影響を調査した. 高温乾燥期には, 果径は昼間に収縮, 夜間に肥大し, 適湿区樹の果実では, 肥大量が収縮量より大であった. この果径の日振幅量, 日肥大量は気温・日射量・飽差と密接な関係があり, とくに昼間の収縮速度と飽差との間には高い相関があった. 肥大量は夜間の後半よりも前半においてすぐれていた. 乾燥区樹の果実では昼間の収縮量がいちぢるしく大で, 夜間の肥大量が劣った. この時の日出前の葉の水ポテンシャル(ψmax)は-10barsをこえていた. なお, 適湿区樹のψ maxは-5bars以下であった. 乾燥区へ昼間にかん水したところ, 果径はそれから夜間にかけて急速に肥大したが, その後は適湿区と同程度になった. 乾燥区樹へ昼間に30分間散水したところ, 葉温と果実温は散水の直後に急速に低下したが, 果径の収縮には殆んど影響が認められなかった.??ψ
