Four kinds of composts were made by heaping mixtures composed of sawdust, chicken excreta and one of sewege sludges from the paper manufacturing (PM), the seasoned preserve food processing (SP), the bean jam processing plants (BJ) and the other food industries (OF), and examined for their agronomic benefit by applying to cultivated fields. (1) When the sludge composts were applied to fields in which spinaches or radishes were grown, a good growth and yields were obtained; especially in the field with SP sludge compost, the plant growth was comparable to that of the field applied with a commercial fertilizer containing N, P and K. (2) The composts were also effective to give rise to the good growth and yields of onions and potatos, which were cultivated successively in the fields after harvesting spinaches or radishes. (3) The chemical properties of soils were examined after harvesting plants. The pH value was no significantly different among the four soils applied with the respective composts, but the EC, C/N and humus content were some-what higher in the soil applied with SP sludge compost than those of the other three. (4) As regards the succession of earthwarms in the four soils, some differences were noted. The number of the warms in the soils applied with PM or SP sludge compost was greater than that in the soils applied with BJ or OF sludge compost. It in the latter two, however, was considerablly great as compared with that of the non-applied soil. (5) When the composts were applied to young peach trees planted in pots, growth of sprouts and roots was favorably good, as compared with that of the non-applied pots after one year later. From these results, it was concluded that the composts made up with sewage sludges, sawdust and chicken excreta were useful for applying to cultivated fields as fertilizers or for amendment of soil.

製紙工場, 佃煮工場, 食あん工場およびその他食品工場から排出される廃水処理汚泥のそれぞれにオガ屑, 鶏糞を混合して4種類の堆肥を作った. そしてそれらを耕作地に施用したときの肥料的効果を検討した. (1)汚泥堆肥を施用した畑地にホウレン草及び大根を栽培したところ, 生育・収量ともに良好であった. 特に佃煮工場汚泥堆肥施用区では3要素肥料施用区に比敵する良好な生育がみられた. (2)汚泥堆肥施用の効果は持続し, 後作として栽培した玉葱, 馬鈴薯の生育・収量に好影響を与えた. (3)栽培後の土壌の化学的性質を調べた結果, pH値は施用汚泥堆肥の種類によってあまり差はみられなかったが, EC, C/N, 腐植含有率は佃煮工場汚泥堆肥施用区において幾分高かった. (4)汚泥堆肥施用土壌中のミミズ棲息状況には堆肥の種類によって差がみられた. ミミズ匹数は製紙工場汚泥および佃煮工場汚泥堆肥施用区が他区に較べて多かった. しかし, 無施用区と対比すると汚泥堆肥施用区はいずれも可成り多い数値であった. (5)汚泥堆肥施用土壌に桃の笛木を植え, 1年後にその生育状況を観察した結果, 新梢の発育, 根の伸長は著しく良好であった. これらの結果から, 廃水汚泥にオガ屑, 鶏糞等を混合して作った堆肥は, 肥料または土壌改良剤として有効であることがうかがわれた.
