Description

It is reported that if the production of ethylene is abundent, the number of female flowers in cucumber increases but that in watermelon decreases. The production of ethylene was measured at cucumber and watermelon plants treated with 100 ppm ethephon. There was no obvious difference of ethylene production in both plants with or without the treatment. To examine the effect of ethylene inhibitor on formation of female flowers of watermelon, 500 ppm silver nitrate was sprayed twice onto plants with daughter veins having from 0.5 to 3.6 unfolded leaves ; the plants had been planted on April 27 and flowered on from late May till early June. The number of female flowers decreased at from 14th to 18th nodes of daughter veins but they increased at from 20th to 28th nodes of daughter veins. As for the latter nodes, giant hermaphrodite flowers, normal female flowers, normal hermaphrodite flowers and hermaphrodite flowers with rudimentry ovaries were formed, and the formation of female or hermaphrodite flowers occurred at from two to five continuous nodes. Then, the number of blooming was a few in early growing season but increased in the latter half. There were much variation in number of female flowers or hermaphrodite flowers on treated plants or on treated veins. When 500 ppm silver nitrate was sprayed onto plants, which had been planted on July 15 and flowered in August, or which had been planted on August 20 and flowered in September, the number of female flowers and hermaphrodite flowers decreased and a giant hermaphrodite flowers was not formed. The effect of silver nitrate on sex expression of watermelon might depend on the season of cultivation and the condition of growing.

内生エチレンの生成が多い場合, キュウリは雌花が増加するがスイカでは減少する. キュウリとスイカにエステル100PPMを処理したものと処理しないものについてエチレンの発生を調べると, エステル処理の有無にかかわらず作物間には明らかな者はなかった. スイカについて, 雌性化に及ぼすエチレン抑制物質の影響を調べるために, 4月27日定植5月下旬?6月上旬開花のものに, 親づるを摘心し子づるが0.5?3.6葉展開時に硝酸銀500PPM液を2回葉面散布した. 子づる14?18節の雌花は減少したが, 20?28節では大形両全花, 普通の雌花と両全花, 不完全両全花が増加し, また2?5節連続して雌花, 両全花がついたものもあらわれた. 開花は早い時期は少なく後半に増加した, 処理による雌花, 両全花の数は株やつるにより変異が大きかった. 7月15日定植8月開花のものおよび8月20日定植9月開花のスイカに同様の処理をした場合, 処理により雌花, 両全花は減少し大形両全花はあらわれなかった. スイカの性分化に及ぼす硝酸銀処理の影響は, 栽培時期や生育条件などによって異るようである.
