Summary
Objective: The present study aimed to examine the feelings of females on Ibuki Island who lived separated from other family members during the perinatal period.
Methods: The subjects were eight females on Ibuki Island who spent time in rooms referred to as “debeya” (rooms for postpartum females). A semi-structured interview was conducted based on an interview guide, and the results were
analyzed qualitatively and inductively. The study was conducted with the approval of the research ethics committee of the Faculty of Medicine of Kagawa University.
Findings: The mean age of the subjects (eight females) was 81.6 years old. The mean number of deliveries was 3.5. The analysis results were classified into five categories including 30 sub-categories. In the past, females living on Ibuki Island were obliged to work hard. They were also told to be [patient and devoted wives]. It was usual for females on the island to live in debeya during the perinatal period. For them, [living together with other postpartum females was
comfortable and fun, although it was sometimes inconvenient]. [The females living in debeya felt secure in that they were able to receive support from reliable midwives since childbirth is an event that may risk their lives]. They also felt that [their lives separated from other family members were supported by their families and friends in the same room].
[They took pride in accepting and handing down the custom practiced on the island to the next generation, and, at the same time, it was natural for them to do so].
Discussion: Through the experience of childbirth - an event that may risk their lives, postpartum females living on Ibuki Island recognized the importance of family members and ties with friends whom they shared the same debeya with. It was necessary for them to spend time in a room referred to as debeya to preserve and hand down the custom to continue to live with pride.
Conclusion: Postpartum females on Ibuki Island lived in debeya separated from their family members during the perinatal period, and it was related to the preservation of the traditional custom and their pride.
