This paper discusses ways to increase motivation of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in science faculties in university in Japan through Task Based Learning (TBL). The first section discusses Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and TBL. The second section outlines motivation in relationship to TBL and Japanese university students. The paper suggests that TBL within a Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) framework can be a very effective means of instruction at the university level provided that the tasks are tailored to meet the specific needs of Japanese university students.
