File
Description

The word, "skinship" , despite appearance, is not English and does not appear in any English dictionary. However, this word is used frequently in Japan to refer to the closeness and, particularly, the bodily contact between a mother and her baby. In this paper I wish to show that: ( 1 ) The word, "skinship" , first appeared in 1958 in a well known Japanese annual publication,バGendai Yougo nO Kisochishiki" , which lists words in cun℃nt use in Japan. It was as a new term describing mother and child relationships in the United States of America, and it was first introduced to Japan by Dr. Nobuyoshi Hirai, a famous psychiatrist specializing in childhood and adolescence. Since then, the term has gradually become common throughout Japan. ( 2 ) All of the 634 women (aged 18-69) who returned my questionnaire recognized "skinship" as an important concept concerning a desirable mother-child relationship, and about 40% believe it to be an accepted term in American child-care terminology. ( 3 ) Though not recognized by most translators from English to Japanese, the term, "skinship" , has nevertheless been diffused throughout Japan by Japanese specialists discoursing on the studies of foreign researchers such as H. F.Harlow, M. A. Ribble, J. Bowlby and M. H. Klaus.
